▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Nagito Komaeda
CANON: Danganronpa
CANON POINT: Post SDR3 anime
AGE: ~22
BACKGROUND: Hope you have a while.
PERSONALITY: Upon first meeting him one would find Nagito to be a friendly and laid-back young man, albeit one with a tendency to be rather self-deprecating and clingy. While being quite harsh on himself he otherwise comes off as optimistic almost to a fault, even under circumstances that seem quite extreme and hopeless. He strongly believes in teamwork and constantly tries to press his classmates into cooperating and working together, believing that if everyone combines their efforts then nothing is insurmountable.
But first impressions can often be deceiving, and such is certainly the case with Nagito Komaeda. Beneath his friendliness lies an obsession with hope and talent that is very far from healthy. He sees hope as an "absolute good" in the world, and believes that the pursuit of hope can be adequate justification for virtually any action, whether it be murder or torture or even his own death. His goal is to aid the other Ultimates in working towards the greatest hope possible, elevating themselves for the good of the world by constantly overcoming greater and greater trials. To achieve this he regularly manipulates and goads people, attempting to create more and more trials for them to surmount and almost always making things more difficult in ridiculous and convoluted ways.
Nagito justifies his decision to join in Ultimate Despair similarly, stating that his confidence in hope prevailing made him accept falling into despair, although his relationship with Junko Enoshima (and despair in general) is quite complicated. Even though he states that he hates her with all of his being he still took a hand from her corpse and attached it to his own body, claiming that he did it to "steal her power" and prove that he could overcome the despair she embodies... But immediately after saying this he seems to grow confused and agitated, making it difficult to discern his true thought process. Like many of his classmates he seems to have quite a love-hate relationship with both Junko and despair as a whole, although he ultimately sees being in Ultimate Despair as the best vantage point from which to witness the battle between hope and despair.
While it is by no means a full excuse for his actions, Nagito has frontotemporal dementia, which affects social cognition and processing/displaying emotion. This could account for his tendency to come off as harsher than he seems to intend and the way he tends to swing between moods. Often times he can come off as quite tactless, regularly saying things that are quite disturbing while smiling. Because of how accustomed to death he is he accepts such things with almost unsettling ease, although it is likely that he has simply adopted this as a coping method and represses his true distress after being forced to regularly confront loss. In general he tends to brush off deaths as the result of the deceased simply not having strong enough hope, a habit which is obviously not appreciated by others and makes him come off as cold and heartless. While he sometimes seems to understand that he said something wrong or that his intention isn’t getting through in his words he also clearly has trouble understanding how to better convey his emotions and pinpointing exactly what he said to upset people. After initially admitting to Hajime that he is sick he immediately tries to claim that he lied about it for sympathy, but this is mostly because he simply didn’t want to let the other get too close to him or sympathize out of concern that his luck would affect him.
Nagito’s constant cycle of good and bad luck has not helped his already fragile mental state and has left him extremely wary of letting other get too close out of fear that his swings of bad luck will effect them. While he seems to actively sabotage his relationships with other people and is adamant in his insistence that that he is a worthless person (at least in comparison to people with talent) it is also clear that he wants companionship, admitting to Hajime that since his diagnosis he’s become afraid of dying alone and wants to experience being accepted and loved at least once in his life. He regularly tries to tag along and interject himself into everyone's activities, although due to his lack of social awareness he often comes off as intrusive even if he just genuinely wants to build friendships.
This colder part of his personality also comes out in his view of how the world works. He believes that people are either inherently born with talent or not, and that if they belong in the latter category then all they can do is serve as stepping stones for those who do possess talent. While he thinks of himself as lesser than his classmates (as he doesn’t see his talent as worthy of praise), he still considers himself above those without talent or those who do not display a level of hope that he considers respectable. When someone is not trying their hardest (or when they are not "worthy" in his mind) he becomes very snarky and harsh, displaying none of the reverent obsession or respect that he usually shows to Ultimate. However there are some exceptions to this, and if someone shows potential to overcome despair in a way that overcomes his expectations he is willing to change his opinion.
Despite his claims of being such a fan of talent, there is also a part of Nagito that seems to resent it. When asked what he would do if not on the island he states that he would live a quiet life without his luck or talent, and in the DR 2.5 short his subconscious creates a world where the "ultimate" talents do not exist. In the simulation he claims to hate talent, because it puts barriers between people that keep them from living happy, calm lives and feeling like they can pursue what they want. Of course once he is freed of the simulation he claims that he didn’t mean any of what was said, but based on his history it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if some deep part of his subconscious does harbor ill will towards talent.
POWERS/ABILITIES: While Nagito is just a normal human, he does have a few traits that make him stand out. First and foremost is his intellect, which he uses to solve virtually all of the cases in SDR2 on his own- often before any of the other characters. He picks up on information very well and is extremely analytical, commonly able to manipulate people in directions that he sees beneficial. He is able to make very elaborate plans and execute them while taking the possible actions and personalities of other people into consideration, making him very formidable.
Less notably he is also very good at cleaning, a small talent that comes up several times.
Luck: Nagito’s title of "Ultimate Lucky Student" isn’t just for show, although his luck works in a very odd and distinct way; he has extreme swings of bad luck followed by equally as extreme swings of good luck. For example, as a child when he was on a trip with his parents the plane was hijacked but through sheer luck a meteorite hit the plane and killed the hijackers, only to also kill his parents and simultaneously leave Nagito to inherit their considerable fortune.
His luck has protected him from death on numerous occasions, including playing Russian Roulette with five bullets in the gun and surviving a terminal cancer diagnosis longer than expected. However, while Nagito’s luck often keeps him alive this almost always comes at the expense of others around him.
